Two Victims Revealed in the Ivy League School Attack as Authorities Press On With Hunt for Gunman.
Both young individuals who died in Saturday’s mass shooting in Providence were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their killer continued following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the single suspect of interest in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was called “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a service on Sunday.
Her role included vice-president of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also shared words of sorrow online, saying in part: “There are no words. Remembering her family and friends, especially her parents.”
The Second Victim
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
The victim's identification was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.
The Shooting Incident
An additional nine individuals were wounded in the violent event in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Law enforcement reported late Sunday that a man aged 24 arrested in a police operation at a lodging about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.
“There is a killer at large,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last 24 hours or so.”
Public Fear
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “This will probably generate new worry for our public”.
The gunman opened fire inside a room in the building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official informed the media outlet.
Law enforcement that raided the hotel recovered two handguns and two ammunition clips when the suspect was taken into custody, the news agency reported.
Those Hurt
Of the nine hurt, one student was allowed to go home, mentioned the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and one was in critical condition, authorities stated on Sunday.
An educational institution, a independent school in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Further Tributes
Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown she was an incredible light in that particular place as well.”
The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.
Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by Umurzokov’s death in a message. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, companions, and schoolmates and grieve for of his bright future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least 392 shooting incidents documented across the United States so far in the current year, according to data. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
