The French government calls on nationals to leave the West African nation urgently during jihadist fuel blockade

The French Republic has delivered an urgent advisory for its nationals in Mali to leave as quickly as possible, as militant groups continue their blockade of the country.

The French foreign ministry recommended individuals to exit using aviation transport while they remain available, and to refrain from surface transportation.

Fuel Crisis Worsens

A two-month-old fuel blockade on the West African country, established by an al-Qaeda-linked organization has disrupted routine existence in the capital, Bamako, and other regions of the landlocked Sahel region state - a former French colony.

France's declaration coincided with MSC - the world's biggest shipping company - revealing it was suspending its activities in the country, referencing the embargo and worsening safety.

Jihadist Activities

The jihadist group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin has created the obstruction by assaulting tankers on main routes.

The country has limited sea access so all fuel supplies are brought in by surface transport from adjacent countries such as Senegal and Ivory Coast.

International Response

Last month, the United States representation in Bamako declared that secondary embassy personnel and their families would leave the nation during the situation.

It stated the fuel disruptions had influenced the energy distribution and had the "potential to disrupt" the "general safety conditions" in "unpredictable ways".

Governance Situation

Mali is now led by a military leadership headed by General Goïta, who initially took control in a government overthrow in 2020.

The military council had civilian backing when it assumed control, committing to deal with the extended stability issues caused by a separatist rebellion in the north by nomadic populations, which was then hijacked by jihadist fighters.

International Presence

The international peace mission and France's military had been stationed in the past decade to deal with the escalating insurgency.

The two have left since the junta took over, and the military government has hired Moscow-aligned fighters to address the insecurity.

Nevertheless, the Islamist rebellion has endured and extensive regions of the northern and eastern territories of the state persist outside government control.
