Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Inclusion in English Test Series Squad

England have chosen a twelve-player squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.

Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.

Both pace bowlers are part of the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about either fast bowler's fitness.

The other seamers round out the bowling group, with Carse expected to miss out if the spinner enters the final team.

Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers

Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted five past matches.

In those matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.

Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.

On a ground renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers is still the probable choice.

Spin Options Considered

There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some spin while additionally bolstering the lower order.

However McCullum has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”

“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” he said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and perform well out here.”
