EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
